Abstract

Mental retardation is a condition characterized by low intelligence (IQ <70) which causes the individual's inability to learn and adapt to society's demands for abilities that are considered normal. The public's negative response to children with mental retardation causes various kinds of reactions from parents who have children with mental retardation, such as parents ostracizing their children or not recognizing them as mentally retarded children. Mentally retarded children are hidden from society because parents feel ashamed to have mentally retarded children. Poverty and the remote location of the area make the lack of knowledge possessed by families of people with mental retardation about the care of patients. Purpose: To determine the effect of health education on knowledge of parents in the care of children with mental retardation. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental method with one group pre-post test design. The population is all families (mothers) who have children with mental retardation totaling 20 people with a sampling technique using total sampling. The data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed by the Wilcoxon test at an error level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that most of the family's knowledge before counseling was carried out was 11 people (55%), and after counseling almost half of the family's knowledge increased by 9 people (45%). Conclusion: There is an effect of health education on the method of treating children with mental retardation on the knowledge of parents in Lajer Penawangan Village.
